Sound and Movement Choir Workshop at St John the Divine

The Sound and Movement Choir for LiquidBody Dance’s audience-interactive multimedia dance performance of Resonant Streams: An Ancient Call with live original music will learn simple sounds and breaths at the workshop on Wednesday, November 9th from 7-9:30p that will play with the rich acoustics in the Cathedral.  This will create a foundational resonance that will help support the dance onstage.  The Sound and Movement Choir will surround the audience area on three sides providing, at times, a cue for audience members to join in and a counterpoint to sound and movement the audience is invited to do.  Simple movement gestures will also augment the resonant field the Choir generates in the space.  The Choir will have the pleasure of deepening into the rich acoustics and spaciousness of the Cathedral after the initial workshop on Wed., with a chance to experience all the other theatrical elements converging for the show including live music (cello, percussion, kora, voice and more) as well as live multimedia acting as virtual sets and costumes and theatrical lighting at the Dress Rehearsal the following evening on Thursday from 8-9:30p.  They will then further enrich their experience on the Friday and Saturday performance evenings from 8-9:15p with all the elements of the performances coming together along with an audience that even further amplifies the energy and movement of these two concerts.

Questions:

What if I can’t sing or can’t sing on key or am shy about my movement or my voice?

The sounds and breaths you will be creating will be atonal and will create a rich acoustical play with the architecture of the Cathedral that will not require trained vocal skill.  The movement will be simple and fluid and will not require any training you won’t get at the workshop.  For anyone with LiquidBody Dance or Movement experience or Continuum Movement experience, the sounds and breaths and movement will be in that style and will be aiming to amplify the resonance from a fluid systems perspective.  Since our bodies are mostly water, we can get everything including our cells moving through resonant vibration with simple sounds like O’s and E’s and JJJ and ZZZ sounds.  This will stimulate sensations of fluidity in your system that will make it easier to join into some subtle movements as if you are water (which you mostly are) or are immersed in water (video projection will help you imagine this).

What do I wear?

You can wear clothes you are comfortable moving in to the workshop and to the Dress Rehearsal and the Performances.  The Cathedral may be chilly, so bring layers in case it is.  If you are coming after work and don’t have the option of changing, all movement will be simple enough to be done in any type of clothing.

What if I can’t be in town or am previously committed for the Wednesday night workshop or the Dress Rehearsal but I can make both Performances?  Can I participate?

Email us at create@TopiaArts.org or call Caryn at LiquidBody 646.845.9272.  If you have LiquidBody Dance or Movement or Continuum Movement experience, we are planning on posting a video of the workshop online that we can send you a link to.  After we receive a confirmation that you have watched the video and are virtually “rehearsed” we will add you to the Choir for the performances.

What if I want to donate more toward the production costs?  Can I make a tax-deductible donation?
